What is glamping and what to expect when you have a glamping holiday in West Wales.

This is something I get asked quite often when I talk to people about what we do here at Henfryn Farm. When you come for a Glamping Holiday in West Wales what should you expect? Is it just like Camping? Is it like staying in a hotel? Quite often people don’t know what to expect when they come to stay with us so I thought I would write a bit about our very own interpretation of Glamping.

Wikipedia tells us the word is a combination of Glamourous and Camping and has apparently been in use in the UK since 2005 and being added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2016. The Oxford Dictionary gives the definition as a form of camping involving accommodation and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping” Well I would say that is pretty accurate, but I am pretty sure there is more to it than that.

With its origins in the word Camping, to us Glamping conjures up images of canvas structures, a posher version of our average tent. Here at Henfryn we have Bell Tents that perfectly fit that canvas glamping vibe. The dappled light that comes through them is one of the elements of camping that I really love. That and the soft thud of rain on canvas are probably the things that remind me most of a camping holiday. If you really can’t face a night under canvas a shepherds hut glamping holiday may be more your thing, ours even has a hot tub for added luxury.

When it comes to home comfort though, with glamping holidays, I think you need a little more than the slowly deflating airbed and the sleeping bag that makes you feel like a trussed up chicken. Here we have proper beds for the grown-ups, with proper mattresses, pillows and duvets. All bedding is included, so that is another difference, a lot less packing is needed for a glamping trip! You even have your own “Camp Kitchen” next to your tent. An undercover space to cook and eat, equip with a gas hob and all the pots pans and crockery you will need for your camp-fare feast.

I guess that brings me to the next point about glamping cooking, it’s not all pot noodles and cuppa soups! A campfire is essential, and campfire cooking is all part of the fun. From the obligatory BBQs, to campfire stew, French onion soup, fresh bread or s’mors, we have seen a fair few campfire creations in our time.

Location is all import and too when it comes to your glamping holiday. A tent right by a busy road is never going to be a relaxing proposition. A green and grassy view with plenty of space between you and your neighbours is what we feel is needed, so that what we aim for. The dawn chorus may wake you up but surely that’s all part of the charm! The wider location is also an important decision. We feel glamping in West Wales is pretty near perfect, the lovely beaches, historical castles, market towns, museums and gardens mean there is something for everyone.

Hopefully you now know what to expect from your glamping holiday, but if you have any questions we would be happy to answer them if we can, just drop us a note.
